What with America reportedly considering letting open gays serve in the military in light of Britain's success lifting its own ban, it's a good time to revisit our question to John McCain: if, as he says, letting gays serve "presents an intolerable risk," why does he believe American soldiers should be required to serve beside people he believes are "intolerable risks" - gay British soldiers - in Iraq and Afghanistan?

As I said on May 3, McCain writes,

"the national security of the United States, not to mention the lives of our men and women in uniform, are put at grave risk by policies detrimental to good order and discipline which so distinguish America's Armed Services." Just how far, McCain should be asked, have good order and discipline declined in the armed forces of the United Kingdom, who have sacrificed 200 brave solders and counting in Iraq and Afghanistan? Are they to be judged no longer "distinguished"?
